WOCN- St. Louis Affiliate Minutes for February 3, 2009 Meeting

  1. Secretary Report- Roxy Lupien. Approval of October  meetings. B.       Website Update-April Kuhlman, Webmaster, Report: August December website visits of 99 visitors, 27 first time visitors and 72 returning visitors.  January website visits of 125 visitors, 44 first time visitors and 81 returning visitors.  April explained how the visits are tabulated based on “cookie” technology.  Subsequent visits may be captured as first time visits if a visitor has security on their computer to block “cookie” tracking. C.       Treasurer Report-Jackie Bangert, Treasurer, Regional/affiliate financial report was presented for calendar year 2008.  January 2008 cash on hand was $22,412.53 (CD  $18,000 savings $2,969.78 and checking $1,445.75).  Cash on hand, December 31, 2008 was $23,051.68 (savings CD $18,000 and Checking $5,051.68).  February 2009 cash on hand $23,051.68 (savings $18,000 and checking $5,051.68) with no income and no expenditures.  A thank you note was received from UOAA President Lee Ann Barcus for the $500.00 donation to their organization in December.  Payment made to April Kuhlman for webmaster duties for the sum of $450.00 was made.  The CD is currently receiving 4% interest on an $18,000 investment, it will mature in April.

 

D.      UOAA Report-Betsy Naeger UOAA Report-Betsy Naeger.   The monthly meeting was held February 2, with good attendance.  Some new members were present.  Dr. Ahrens was the featured speaker.  The annual Product Fair is scheduled for May 4, 2009 at 7PM at St John’s Mercy in the VonGontard Conference Center.  Raffles will include a gift certificate for a Bed and Breakfast and 2 hand made quilts.  Attendance is encouraged. Membership for the UOAA is $12.00 annually and currently meets on the First Monday of the month with alternating evening and days. E.       WOCN positions- Roxy Lupien reported an opening with KCI for the Wound VAC. Please contact Marge Groom or April Kuhlman with any employment listings and can be accessed on the WOCN-St. Louis Affiliate Website.   

 

F.       New Members/Guests- Deena Muscarella was attending representing Christian Hospital, Deena just completed her preceptorship at the hospital in Jacksonville and Springfield, IL.  Janet Kaminski just completed the program at Emory and is sitting for boards.  She is employed in the Education department at SSM.   Debbie Coleman was a guest from St. Anthony’s Medical Center. Ruth Petrov was a guest from DePaul Health Center.

 

1.      Old Business.

a.        Scholarship committee- Linda Geurin absent.  Report given by Jackie Bangert.  Linda has not received any applications for scholarship requests.  Her contact information to request a scholarship application is email:  lfg1804@aol.com.  She also gave her phone number, but not sure if appropriate to post on the web site.  Her phone number is 636-294-9293.

b.       Preceptors.  Preceptors are needed; two individuals at St. John’s Mercy have requested preceptors.  PGC points are awarded for precepting.  Discussion on the difficulty surrounding the contract associated with the webWOC program was held.  SLU Hospital has been negotiating with the Minneapolis webWOC program for over a year without resolution. 

c.        Holiday Party committee- Jackie Bangert reported income of $2,400.00, expenses  of $1,728 and  UOAA donation of $500.00 resulted in a clearance of $188.00 from the Holiday Party.  Thanks to all who came.

d.       Wound, Ostomy, and Continence National-41st Annual Conference-The Gateway to Knowledge June 6-10, 2009.  Marge Groom reported no news from National regarding conference. Events will be at the Edward Jones dome.  There may be a need for volunteers as room monitors or announcers, PGP points are awarded for service.  Pins from St. Louis were handed out to members to wear during conference.  Hospitality Room at the Drury Inn for St. Louis Affiliate members to use to take a break from conference, store their belongings, etc was discussed.  Michelle Raines made a motion to book one hospitality room and Betsy Naeger seconded the motion.  Marge Groom is going to reserve the room.

e.        Officers- WOCN St. Louis Affiliate upcoming elections August 4, 2009.  Marge requested volunteers for a nominating committee.  Volunteers included Betsy Naeger, Linda Stamm and Marge Groom.  Positions open will be President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

 

2.      New Business-Marge Groom, President

 

a.        Undie 5000 Run/Walk will be held Saturday, March 28, 2009 in Forest Park in the Upper Muny parking lot.  It is sponsored by the Colon Cancer Alliance to raise awareness of Colon cancer.  The organization would greatly appreciate our involvement and asked members to promote the event to their staff and to any surgeons they are affiliated with Colon Cancer.  Volunteer positions are available to help on event day and please notify Marge Groom if interested.  The Colon Cancer Alliance is anticipating making this an annual event in St. Louis.

b.       WOCNews-Affiliate news submitted included UOAA’s Nurse of the Year selection of Janet Knebel.  Marge notified conference attendees about the arch pins the St. Louis members would be wearing to distinguish ourselves.  Jackie Bangert suggested we post information on the St. Louis Cardinals scheduled home games during Conference.

c.        Conference Ribbons.  Discussion was held on various ideas to market ourselves at Conference as members of the St. Louis affiliate.  Christine Heady suggested we have members bring in sample ribbons/buttons, etc. to the April meeting for us to look at and then make a decision on what we want to persue.  Marge will contact National to find out what color ribbon would be appropriate.

d.       Conference Posters- BJC  reported 7 posters were accepted, Janette Dietzler, St. Anthony’s Wound Treatment Center had a poster accepted as well as Marge Groom.  Way to go, St. Louis.

e.        WOCN Research proposal was circulated, there is funding up to $200,000.00 available to study the impact of WOCNs in acute care on patient outcomes.  Please apply.  Information on the proposal is available on the WOCN website under outcomesrfp 

        

3.      Announcements, Question proposed to the group:  In your practice, have you seen an increase in problems associate with bedpan usage with the push to remove urinary catheter
